What can wait and what cannot

Timeline for Injected Veins to Fade

Sorted by what can wait and what cannot, with the point where a clinician takes over.

Injected veins fade slowly, and the wait can feel long. This one can wait.

This page sets out what three sources say about timing, notes where they differ, and says when to stop waiting and call.

The first weeks

Vein Directory says: "Your spider or varicose veins should start to fade within a few weeks, although it can take several months before they are gone completely." Your clinic can tell you what to expect for your own veins. For day-to-day recovery, read Kaiser Permanente's at-home guide.

What is happening inside the vein

RadiologyInfo.org describes the process: "Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view." Cleveland Clinic says it in one line: "Eventually, the vein turns into scar tissue and fades away." Both describe the same slow process, and neither gives a number of days.

Where the numbers differ

Vein Directory gives a loose range: a few weeks to start, several months to finish. RadiologyInfo.org adds a firmer line: "In most cases, they disappear within three to six months, but can be permanent about five percent of the time." Our excerpt does not say what "they" refers to, so read the original page before applying it to veins.

Cleveland Clinic says "eventually" and nothing more. That is three levels of detail with no direct contradiction. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons spider vein page is one more place to compare.

What to do while you wait

  1. Note the date of each session and take a photo every few weeks.
  2. Compare photos with each other, not with the mirror.
  3. Bring the photos to your follow-up.

When waiting is no longer the plan

Gradual fading is what these sources describe. Sudden, painful swelling in one leg is not part of waiting, and it should go to a clinician the same day.
